Raoul Wallenberg (1912-?)Swedish diplomat who saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews in Budapest. By his untiring efforts Wallenberg issued special passports to the Jews of Budapest, thus rescuing them from being deported to Auschwitz. After the war, he opened hostel in Budapest, where surviving Jews could stay. Wallenberg disappeared in 1945. It is believed that he was sent to the Soviet Union as a prisoner, where he was either killed or perished. Back |
